Author: DAOUDI, Samia; VOISIN, Jean-Francois; DOUMANDJI, Salaheddine
Description: Faeces of House Martin Delichon urbica were collected between 1st July and 15th September at a small breeding colony in Algeria. The diet of the martin was almost exclusively (99.8 %) composed of flying insects. Sixty-six insect species (1 166 individuals) were identified at taxonomic levels varying from order to species. Hymenoptera dominated (85.7 % of individual insects, 82.7 % being winged ants), followed by Coleoptera (8.7 %) and Hemiptera (4.7 %). Diptera accounted for only 0.5 % of the insect part of the diet and Aphids were lacking. Such a diet resembles more that of tropical than temperate martins and swallows.
