Title West Germany : a paradoxical power

Abstract This article examines two seemingly contradictory views of West Germany : that its economic and industrial success will continue, based on the excellent performance of its productive system and the quality of its training schemes; or that it is a power in decline due to ageing and demographic factors, weakness in the service industries, and a rigid social system. Based on an analysis of the political, economic and sociocultural reasons for West German post-war success, it is hypothesized that material and industrial success will continue. The major factor which may presage decline is demographic in origin, but we should beware any thesis of German 'sclerosis'
