Title Europe 1992 : the dream and the reality
Author GODET, Michel
Abstract This article examines the goal of a single internal European market to be enacted by the 12 EC states by 31 December 1992. The putative benefits put forward in detail by the Commission may cause severe problems for European regions and enterprises, yet may provide opportunities for Europe's competitors without some element of European protectionism. And paradoxically, the drive towards liberalism and internal free trade may lead to centralism and abuse of monopoly power in Brussels. The major benefits of the drive towards 1992 derive from mobilizing debate and analysis, yet this should be founded on European realities, not illusions
