Title La spirale du silence
Author NOELLE-NEUMANN, Elisabeth
Description Individuals need to conform to their social environment. It is thus very important for them to check the opinion of others, knowing than an individual whose views rebel against public opinion would be threatened. Individuals who feel isolated, thus tend to keep their opinions to themselves. This process is amplified by the role of media as our main access to the opinion of others, and leads to a « spiral of silence », a concept which proves essential to our understanding of media influence.
