| Abstract | A partir d'une critique des usages idéologiques des catégories ethniques en Polynésie française, l'article montre que les catégories ma'ohi (autochtone) et popa'a (étranger blanc) forment une opposition structurante à Tahiti. De même que les deux groupes ethno-culturels ma'ohi et demi (personnes issues de mariages mixtes) sont objectivement visibles sur les plans culturel, économique et social. Or, les élites essentiellement demis se servent de la catégorie ma'ohi pour construire un Etat national dont ils seraient les principaux bénéficiaires. | |
| Description | This article takes a critique of the ideological use of ethnic categories in French Polynesia is a starting point to show how categories such as “maohi” (native) and “popaa” (white foreigner) constitute a structuring opposition in Tahiti. Moreover, the two ethno-cultural groups, “maohi” and “half-casts” (the children of mixed marriages) are objectively visible on cultural, economic and social levels. Nonetheless the predominantly “half-cast” elite uses the “maohi” category to build a nation-state of which they aim to be the main beneficiaries. | |
