Title Le fait religieux à Tahiti, obstacle ou vecteur de progrès ?
Author SOUPE, Dominique
Description Two areas of interrogation linked to sociology and politics preoccupy the French Polynesian churches. Firstly the identity crisis linked to the upsurge in “secular” media coverage resulting from the 30 years of experiments carried out by the Pacific Nuclear Test Center (CEP) which have led to the disruption of both the economic system and the scale of values. And secondly the shock caused by the sudden end of nuclear testing and the extension of the Territory's autonomous status. These latter two events that caught the population unawares. Within this context that the author shows how the churches have responded to the “atomic mutation” with a church-based mutation that has involved lay people in a project aimed at breaking welfare dependency and developing new strategies for growth and education. Although communication between the religions can be difficult, the churches do agree on the essential values founded upon human nature. It is therefore within secular society that they may exert their influence.
